Our church started a #LighttheWorld event for this month. Everyday for the first 25 days of December leading up to Christmas, there is a focus on a different Christlike behavior that we have the opportunity to try and emulate in some way. This way we can share the light of Christ with the world. It has really been a great way to focus on Christ and on being more like Him. Some of my favorites have been; Jesus Honored His Parents and So Can You, Jesus Fed the Hungry and So Can You, Jesus Ministered to Children and So Can You, Jesus Worshiped through Song and So Can You.
They are all really good suggestions and have helped me draw closer to my Savior, my family, and my friends and neighbors.
Today's focus was: Jesus Showed Compassion and So Can You. One of the suggested ways to do this was to 'pray for an opportunity today to show someone compassion.' I decided to do so and just said a little prayer in my head while I made breakfast this morning. Then, with the busyness of the day I kind of forgot about it until this afternoon.
I lost track of time and before I realized it, it was past time to go pick up Kade from school. Tenley and I rushed out the door, but then had to drive pretty slowly on the poorly maintained roads. The roads were snow packed and icy so I knew we'd be a little late. As we were pulling up to a light I noticed people driving around a car. And then I noticed that car's wheels were spinning and the poor lady was stuck. I was anxious to get to Kade's school and knew I wouldn't be of much help to this lady anyway, but as I started to pull around her I immediately thought about the focus for today. I knew I needed to stop and show some compassion. I got out of my car and started to push on hers, but the car wouldn't budge. After a minute or so another lady got out of her car to come and help me push. Not too long after that three men came to help us and we finally got the lady out of the snow pile. Then we all got back into our cars and kept driving.
I was grateful for a lot of things then. I was so glad for the help from those four other people. I was happy that we were able to help this lady. I was grateful that I listened to the prompting to stop and help. And I was really grateful for an answer to my prayer from this morning.
I pray a lot and I pray for a lot of things. Most of the things I pray for are requests and pleadings that I know will take some time to be answered. That's why having such a direct answer to my prayer today was special to me. It reminded me that God loves us and hears our prayers. And it helped me think less about my own problems and more about how I can be more like Christ because it feels so good to serve others.
I'm grateful for the light of Christ that is in each and every person on Earth and for how bright the world seems when we all shine that light together.
