MacGyver

Brad’s favorite show growing up was MacGyver and gratefully all the episodes he watched really paid off with all the home projects we need him for. Today we created a huge problem for him when we tried to fix an issue ourselves.

Brad was at meetings all night long. He is over the audit for the stake and he had a huge meeting with all of those on the audit committee to prepare for the upcoming audit. I knew it was overwhelming him since it’s his first time doing it so I absolutely did not want to bother him. I figured he’d be home late and the kids and I would just hang out.

We had a fun night taking Luke to his soccer game. He played great even in the 90 plus degree heat and even scored three goals! We came home and while Luke and Ryder were taking a bath downstairs I suddenly hear Luke yell, “Mom we need you! It’s an emergency!” I rolled my eyes thinking it was nothing that serious, and really it wasn’t. No one was hurt or dying so it wasn’t a true emergency. But, they couldn’t get the water to shut off. No matter how you turned the handle on the bathtub the water kept pouring out. I noticed the screw on the handle and Kade and I tried to find the right Allen wrench for it. We tried several and couldn’t get it figured out. The screw wouldn’t budge! Kade shut the water off to the house (or at least he thought he did) and I decided we’d just leave the situation like that until Brad made it home and could help us. But then our water alarm went off by the water heater in the utility closet. It was leaking. Kade hadn’t shut the water off to the whole house, he had just shut it off to the water heater. I honestly had no idea before tonight how to shut off the water to the house…

I had Kade undo what he had done and the water just came pouring out of the shower again. But at least the water heater wasn’t leaking! I told Kade that he may as well take his shower for the night since the water was running anyway. Kade continued to try to loosen the bolt but with no luck. He did end up completely stripping it though, which caused a major problem when Brad finally did make it home and couldn’t unscrew the screw even with the right tools.

He thought and thought and thought and then came down the stairs with some sort of drill and he drilled himself a screwdriver line in the stripped screw so he could finally loosen it. I was so impressed. We finally got the handle off the shower! Hooray!

But we still can’t figure out how to stop the water. Sounds like we’ll need to call a plumber in the morning. Until then, our water is off.

It was a stressful night but like I mentioned earlier, things could be worse. When I tucked Ryder in he was emotional and I just reminded him that at least we’re all together and healthy. We are lucky.

But I’m still hoping the problem is fixed sooner than later!
